NYX Butter Glosses: Tiramisu, Red Velvet, and Devil's Food Cake

So my Target has been selling this set and a lighter version of 3 more NYX butter glosses for the holiday season for $10. Normally at Target a single NYX gloss costs $5 so this is basically a buy two get one free deal.

Here are the swatches:

I love the NYX butter glosses because they are creamy and long wearing without being sticky. They also smell like cake batter which is amazing!!! I just want to eat these glosses everytime I put them on...of course I don't...that would be unhealthy. :( I don't recommend spending money on this set just to get a deal unless you really like the colors in this set or the lighter version. This was the perfect set for my NC45 skin tone and I have been dying to get my hands on both Tiramisu and Devil's Food Cake so Rev Velvet was just a plus. It's a classic red shade so it's quite perfect for those among us that are not super daring with lip shades or those among us that prefer classic colors for the holidays.

What lippies are you guys in love with right now?

The Perfect Hot Chocolate

Now that the winter season is upon us, I wanted to share my recipe for the perfect hot chocolate. This is great for those cold nights alone or for a hot chocolate bar at a holiday party. I had a friend comment on how this hot chocolate "looked like something you would pay $3 at some fancy cafe." I consider that a win. I know that when I was a kid, I always felt like I was kinda missing out on a "special drink" at holiday parties. All the adults would be drinking alcoholic drinks and the kids didn't have much variety beyond juice. Not only is hot chocolate a festive and exciting alternative, creating a make-it-yourself hot chocolate bar will also entertain the young ones.

Here is what I used:

1 packet of Starbucks hot chocolate per cup (This makes a large cup in my opinion and can be shared)
1 cup of milk per packet of Starbucks hot chocolate
1 can of whipped cream
1 packet of marshmallows
cinnamon
peppermint sticks
sprinkles

How to Make It:

Heat the milk in the microwave until hot. Then add the hot chocolate mix. Stir. Get crazy with the toppings!

I am working on my own special recipe for the hot chocolate and will post it as soon as it is ready. Until then you guys can enjoy this one.

Part Two: How to Winterize Your Nails

In the last post, I told you guys I had teamed up with Julep to share how I winterize my nails. You can click here for the first half of this post if you missed it. If you are all caught up, here are the rest of my looks inspired by Julep's style personalities:

Bombshell
To me, the Bombshell, is the girl who is always perfectly put together and in line with what is currently in style. Since greys are very popular this year, I was inspired to create a nail look based on this outfit from Banana Republic (I believe). I also included a little bit of sparkle on the nails using Kiss Nails nail polish so that they are holiday ready. I used Julep's Lorenzana and Clara for the half moon manicure. Lorenzana has been my go-to polish this entire fall season. It's such a beautiful nude and the hint of grey makes it very of-the-moment.

Boho Glam
Boho Glam is a very fun, creative style. So I really tried to capture the winter season on the nail. What better way to do that than a string of festive holiday lights?! I would recommend spreading reducing the light colors to maybe two or three, however. I chose four and it got a bit chaotic. I used Julep's Donna, Lexie, and January for the lights as well as Butter London's Royal Navy. The base was NYC's white but Julep's Soraphine is similar. You could use Julep's Plie brush to draw the string for the lights or grab a fine point Sharpie like I did.

It Girl
The It Gitl is someone who is very trendy and chic. Black nails are edgy and a look I always picture an "it girl" wearing; also nail art is quite popular these days so I wanted to combine the two for my nail look. I created the snowman using a dotting tool similar to the one that comes with Julep's Plie Wand. To get this look I used Julep's Soraphine, Jet, and OPI's In My Back Pocket which is similar to Julep's Cody.

Below are a few of Julep's suggestions for winter nail colors. You can get them here.

Let me know in the comments which one is your favorite! I can't wait to get my hands on Joanne and Shari! Ilsa and Kiki remind me of the movie "Frozen"!

Part One: How To Winterize Your Nails

So as the weather starts to get colder, there are several things we can look forward to: decorated store fronts, hot chocolate, comfy sweaters, and.......dry, chapped hands?!

Well, thanks to MakeupandMasala and Julep, hopefully the last one will not be the case. We've teamed up to share with you guys some of the best tips and products to keep your tips and toes winterized:

One of my favorite tricks is product versatility. I keep the Julep Pedi Creme in my handbag at all times. I slather it on my feet during flip flop season when my feet need a little extra TLC. However, in the winter, I have found that, in a pinch, it works as a great hand moisturizer. This is especially important for me since I live in the desert and work in a lab all the time so my hands are usually very dry from the climate and the excessive use of solvents.

Let's be honest, We all like pampering and manicuring our nails. But the best part is definitely the polish! Another way I "winterize" my nails is picking out colors and patterns that are more on trend for winter. Cue the glitter. Winter is the season of holiday parties and excessive glitz and glam. I normally wear conservative cream finishes, but during the holidays I get a little fancy. In honor of the season, I created four winter looks to take you from the office to holiday parties and from day to night based on Julep's style personalities.

Classic With A Twist
This look is one of my favorite since I, myself, am Classic With A Twist. I wanted a day to night look since I have to have conservative nails for work, but I want them to be holiday party ready. With this look, you can wear the timeless red nail to work and glitz it up before the weekend party. The glitter tips took me all of 10 minutes to apply before I was out the door and off to party. I used OPI's Mrs. O'Leary's BBQ for the red and Julep's Paris for the glitter. I actually wanted to use Julep's Coco for the red since the two came as a set during the Paris Collection, but I left it at my boyfriend's house after painting my nails there.

Stay tuned to see more Julep inspired looks in Part Two! In the mean time, be sure to check out Julep's new nail polish colors!

Smokey Eye Look: Amrezy Palette and Nude 'Tude Palette

So I'm headed to Vegas for Thanksgiving and I wanted to perfect a night look I could wear while clubbing. You can use one of two palettes for this look: the Amrezy Palette from Anastasia Beverly Hills or the Nude 'tude Palette from theBalm. I'm sorry my picture quality is not amazing. I'm hoping to get a new camera soon. Hope you enjoy this look!

Tamanna Palette (Limited Edition)

So the Tamanna Palette just came out a few weeks ago. Being the good South Asian I am, I had to go get it...especially since it was modeled after South Asian bridal makeup. Dressing up in a sari and wearing makeup is so fun and this palette is perfect for all brown skinned gals. I even picked up an extra one for my mother. If you are in love with it, remember to pick it up ASAP as it is a limited edition palette at ULTA, Sephora, and Anastasia Beverly Hills.

This palette, like all Anastasia palettes, does not disappoint. The colors are gorgeous, super buttery, and pigmented. Also it is the most original in regards to the shades of eyeshadow found in the palette since a few of the last palettes have duped other Anastasia eyeshadow palettes for at least one or two colors.

Inglot Custom Palette

So I have had this palette for at least a year but I have not had a chance to review the colors or show them to you.

Overall, I love the shimmer shadows the best. The matte shadows from Inglot tend to be a bit chalky. I recommend these shadows as a budget friendly alternative to MAC. With the Freedom System, you can create a custom palette like I have done here. The palette I have is a 10 pan square palette for $16. Each of the single shadow pans (which are huge!!!) cost only $6 while the rainbow shadow pans cost $8. Feel free to comment below with any questions.

All of these products are things I currently own,  have my eyes on, or have owned in the past. I will also be doing swatches of the Tamanna Palette and the MAC Warm Neutrals palette for you guys in the future. Enjoy!

August Favorites: MAC, Ole Henriksen, Nars and More!

1. Rainymood.com. I love the rain and this website gives me the next best thing! I just turn it on at night on my Iphone when I can't sleep. It's an insomniac's dream.

2. Lorenzana polish by Julep. I have been wearing this perfect nude color for a few months after getting it in my last maven box!

3. Ole Henriksen's Truth Serum Collagen Booster. I can't get enough of this. I layer it under my Murad Night Cream and I have had the most flawless, dewy skin all month long. It's especially great because I feel like I don't get huge breakouts anymore or scarring left on my skin especially during that time of the month. ;)

4. MAC's Springsheen Blush. This blush is a total dupe of NARS Orgasm and also of Milani's Rose D'Oro. It gives you the perfect summertime flush of pink for youthful cheeks.

5. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. I am in the color Caramel. I have recently switched over to this concealer from Bobbi Brown since I feel like it creases less. I set mine with a little powder under the eyes and I am good for almost the whole day.

What have you been loving this summer???

MAC Mini Haul: Proenza Schouler, Sensual Sparks, Expensive Pink and More!

So while at the mall trying to stock up on some necessities, I happened to stop by the MAC counter. Bad idea for my pocketbook as always, but great for my sanity. Here are a few of the products I picked up that are very brown girl friendly.

Artsy Wednesday: Farewell

So today is the final Artsy Wednesday, at least for now. The group has decided to move on to other things. In the future, I might decide to start my own nail art group in homage to what LabMuffin started. For those of you who love nail art, NEVER FEAR! I will still be posting NOTDs on my blog randomly when I get the chance to do something cool with my nails. For this week, I am posting a chevron nail design since this is my first time to attempt a chevron. I've admired this style of nail but couldn't get myself to master it. I hope to use chevrons more often in future manicures.

Be sure to check out the other girls' Farewell manicures:

Mini Haul: Sephora and Outlet Mall featuring Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier and Ole Henriksen

So a few weekends ago, I did some shopping and wanted to share some of my new finds. I'll be reviewing them individually later on this month so keep an eye out for those posts!

1. Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Warm Honey. I have wanted this product for a while after seeing SamRam1214 talk about Bobbi Brown products for covering dark eye circles. This one is not particularly for eyes, but I plan on using it for my eyes and just all over my face. The best part was that I paid only $17 for it instead of the regular $24 since I found it at a cosmetic overstock store while visiting the outlets.

2. Laura Mercier Oil Free SPF 20 Tinted Moisturizer in Walnut ($44). I have wanted this FOR EVER!!! I've heard Ingrid Nilsen and Elle Fowler rave about it on Youtube so I finally caved and decided to give it a chance since I have very oily skin right now.

3. Ole La La Glow From Head to Toe ($59 at Sephora stores). I actually wanted the Seven Wonders Kit($59) (idk if this is the correct name but it has 7 products in it) from Ole Henriksen that is online on Sephora after hearing many good reviews of this product. I didn't realize the Seven Wonders was an online-only product so when I walked into my local Sephora I wound up getting this left over set from Christmas. I'm not complaining however since I paid the same as I would have for the Seven Wonders and walked away with more stuff at a STEAL. Apparently this product retailed for a lot more around Christmas time ($70-$130). There are a few product differences from the Seven Wonders (no Walnut Scrub), but I am eager to test this kit out. I will definitely let ya'll know the results :).

What have you guys bought lately? Anything that you haven't bought that you are itching to buy? I've also been on a Bobbi Brown kick lately since I own none of her products so if you have a recommendation please let me know in the comments or on Twitter @makeupandmasala !!!

NOTD: OPI Samoan Sand

Artsy Wednesday: Easter

This week's theme was an Easter inspired mani. I wanted to do a moon manicure with gold glitter so my nails looked like Easter eggs. Here is the result. Unfortunately, Butter London's West End Wonderland is more of a glitter topcoat and not solid enough to create a nice moon shape :(. I really need to find a good gold polish for cheap that is similar to West End Wonderland that I can manipulate to my desire for stamping and manicures such as this one. Recommendations are welcome!

NOTD: Neutral Leopard Print

So I haven't been stamping for a while, and I've been dying to try the leopard print stamp from Cheeky. I also bought a few new neutral nail colors for this spring while visit family in Los Angeles. I used OPI's Samoan Sand for the base coat and Nicole by OPI's Hard-Kourt Fashionista for the stamping. I don't know what is up with my camera these days, and I do apologize for the blurriness of the photo.  While the stamping may seem a bit imperfect, when on the nails people only notice how pretty my nails are! :)

What are your favorite nail trends for spring? Any colors/nail looks you are dying to try out? Let me know in the comments!

Friday Finds: Victoria's Secret, Naturally Pretty Palette, a la mode Eyes, and More!

1. Victoria Secret's Island Rush Line. OMG, you have to smell this! It smells exactly like a tropical vacation. I am absolutely in love.  The notes are pomelo fruit and coconut which gives the scent a balance of warmth and citrus. It's the prefect combo of the two types of scents I gravitate towards so yay! Also, if you were like me and did some shopping last month here, make sure to redeem the Secret Reward card during the month of April!
2. It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Vol 1 Matte Luxe Palette. Whew! That's a mouthful. This is It Cosmetics answer to the " rosy nude" palette looks that have become popular based on the Naked 3's popularity. The advantage of this palette over all the others is that this one is all matte plus a 'transforming white" shadow that can blend with any of the other shades if you have the itch for some shimmer in your shadow. It gets an A+ for versatility and creativity in my book.
3. Too Faced's a la mode Eyes Palette. I saw this at my local Ulta, and cannot stop drooling over it. It seems like the perfect palette for tanned skin girls and WOC since it has lots of nice brown/pinks. The dark pink and navy add a nice pop of color. I would already have purchased this by now except I have too many palettes right now (we'll see how long I believe that), and I bought several Too Faced palettes last summer so I feel I need to explore other brands a bit.
4. Jane Cosmetics. The 90's brand has come back. I was not familiar with it in the 90's since I preferred a natural, no makeup look. I recently bought one of their bronzers since they have a very large color range and meet the needs of WOC quite well in terms of bronzer.

How To End Split Ends FOREVER

Miraculously, I have finally figured out how to rid myself of split ends (as least for a long time). Woohoo!!!

I did simplify my routine a bit. Usually I alternate shampooing with a Lush bar and regular Herbal Essences shampoo. Also, I would like to stress the importance of a healthy diet to grow long, healthy hair ( plenty of fish and nuts) and the importance of limiting how much you style/apply heat to your hair.

What is your hair care routine? Any favorite products I should know about? Let me know in the comments below!

Artsy Wednesday: April Fool's/Joke Mani

I'm actually very proud of this mani and the thought that went into it. I didn't really know what to do for a "joke" mani. Then it hit me out of the blue one day. My mani is basically the embodiment of the quote "All that glitters is not gold." The bronze/gold represents fool's gold to go along with the April Fool's theme while the brown symbolizes the "dirt." Hope you guys think it's cool! I apologize for the fuzziness of the picture but my camera never seems to pick up glitter polish very well.

I used OPI's Pros and Bronze for the stripes and Nicole By OPI's Hard-Kourt Fashionista.

Be sure to check out the other girls' April Fool's manis:

March Favorites: Walking Dead, Tea, Nicole by OPI, and More!

Hi guys! Long time no blog, right? My apologies. I have been going through some health issues, one of which includes carpel tunnel. Blogging has been out of the question for some time as it hurts me to even grip a pencil or feed myself with my hands. But that's enough Debbie Downer talk...on to my favorites for the month!

1. Celestial Sleepytime Herbal Tea. The nights have still been kind of chill where I live so I love making myself a cup of tea. I am an insomniac as well so the Sleepytime tea is perfect for winding down before bedtime. I make my cup with some ginger crystals and a bit of honey. The combo also does wonders for a sore throat!
2. Nude Tude Palette. This palette made my September favorites back in 2013 and then I just let it sit for awhile when I got my Naked 3. However, this month I cannot get enough of this palette! The red shade and the browns are my favorite. I've posted one of my looks using the palette here.
3. Pinterest. Late at night when I can't fall asleep, I kill time by browsing Pinterest. I get a lot of inspiration for my lifestyle from Pinterest. You can check out my page here and if you like what you see follow me at MakeupandMasala (shameless plug I know)!
4. On What Grounds? By Nicole by OPI. I got this polish in an Ipsy bag for the month of March and I have fallen in love. While I'm not a big fan of the rough texture of this polish (it has a sandpaper texture), I like how long my mani lasts and the color is perfect for a bright bold spring look. You can check out an extended review here
5. Amy's Indian Mattar Paneer. Since my hand has been messed up, I try not to cook since chopping anything aggravates my hand. As a result, I've been exploring the frozen food aisle a bit. I like Amy's products since they are a healthy alternative to most frozen food. Depending on the product, you can find gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian and low sodium meals.  I also like that they package the meal on a paper container so you don't have to worry about harmful chemicals leeching into your food when you heat the product up in the microwave. Also Amy's Indian cuisine is the most authentic I have had coming from a box (and I'm South Asian so I have a pretty good idea of what "good" Indian food is).
6. AMC's The Walking Dead. I LOVE this show. I'm only on Season 3 so NO SPOILERS, people! It's the most realistic portrayal of an end-of-the-world situation I have ever seen (minus the zombies). If you want to watch the show from the beginning, Netflix has the first 3 seasons online.

What have you guys been loving this month? I'm excited to try your recommendations!

My Skin Care Routine: Oily Skin

So I have never shared my skin care routine with you guys so I thought it might be interesting to share. I have a thyroid condition so my skin alternates between oily, combination, and dry. Although most of my life, I have had dry to combination skin, lately, it has been oily. But not as oily as some people who experience chronic acne (is that even a term? you guys get the idea).

A few of the products in this routine are pretty pricey. The Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus runs about $70 when I bought it years ago, and the VenoMAX was a pretty impressive sample size from BeautyBar. Their products are high end and come with a bit of a price tag. I am not bragging about the fact that I use these products or encouraging everyone out there to go buy these at the risk of breaking your budget. I am simply stating what I use/what works for me. Skincare is about solutions that work for you so not everything works on everyone. Part of the reason I actually use the Clinique product is that I have aging skin concerns (wrinkles, pigmentation). If you do decide to invest, however, you should know that the Clinique product lasts FOREVER the way I use it. My bottle has been around for 4 years and is still going strong.

Hope you guys enjoy this! Do you have any skincare products your swear by? Any oily skin tips? Let me know in the comments!

Eye shadows Under Ten Dollars: Inglot, Maybelline, Sigma, and More!

I thought this would be an handy-dandy reference for us (yes, I wanted this as well) so we could keep in mind that there are some really affordable quality eye shadows out there. Being pretty does not mean having to break the bank (although I have been guilty of this).

1. Inglot Eyeshadows $6. Inglot makes some of my favorite shadows. You can easily find many MAC dupes within their collections, and they have a LARGE eye shadow collection. The only down side is that it is hard to find an Inglot store in the US. I get mine at the Inglot store in Las Vegas or Fashion Island in Costa Mesa California. There are also several Macy's stores that carry Inglot in store (Beverly Center, Los Angeles).
2. Maybelline Eyeshadow Quads. Unfortuantely, I don't know the price of my quad since I bought it so long ago. I do know it was cheap. And it has lasted me forever. I can even use the Natural Smokes quad as an eyebrow filler.
3. Sigma Individual Eye shadows $11. So I cheated a little. These are a dollar more than the $10 limit I set for this post, but hopefully, a dollar won't break your budget. I had to put these in here since a lot of other bloggers don't include Sigma when talking about good budget eye shadows. Sigma keeps rolling out more and more colors all the time, and the shadows go on like butter on the lid.
4. Wet n Wild Eyeshadow Trios $4. These shadows are a great option for girls on a budget. I own a bunch of these trios. The ten? pan palettes are very budget friendly as well although I do not own any myself and cannot tell you the price. The shadows themselves go on buttery-smooth and last all day with primer. There is a bit of fall out due to shimmer so if that is not your thing, you might want to avoid these. Also I think the shimmer emphasizes wrinkles so this might not be a good eye shadow for mature women.
5. NYX Eyeshadow $4-10. Love Love Love! I cannot say anything bad about these. They have a great color range and go on buttery smooth. In addition, they come in a variety of finishes (matte, shimmer, etc). The one down side to me posting this now is that NYX has recently changed their eyeshadow packaging to circular pots similar to MAC. I think they have changed the shades and the names as well. Knowing NYX, the new shadows should be the same as or better than the old products, however, if you decide you want to stick to the square packaging, they can be found online at various discount drugstore makeup sites that sell discontinued products.
6. Be a Bombshell Eyeshadow Quad $16. Again I cheated here a little since this quad isn't under $10.  However, the size of each color pot will last a long time so the per color cost is under $10 ($4/color). These shadows go on smooth, have lots of pigment payoff, and last all day with primer. The down side is that there is not a large collection of quads to select from, limiting the color range.

These are my drugstore/budget eye shadow favorites that I have personally tried. What drugstore/budget eye shadows are your go-to products? I'd love to try them out!

Disclaimer: All products purchased by me. I did not receive any compensation for the opinions listed here.

Subscription Box: IPSY March 2014

Lately IPSY has had some awesome bags! I was thrilled by February's bag, and I'm over the moon about March's bag. Despite the fact that there are only 4 products, these products are amazing!

I received:
Nicole by OPI polish in On What Grounds?
bareMinerals Marvolous Moxie Lipstick in Get Ready
Pacifica's Indian Coconut Nectar Body Butter
Be A Bombshell's Eyeshadow Quad in Bora Bora

Here are the swatches:

I love the eyeshadow quad colors. They have great color payoff and look fabulous on colored skin tones. I like that the quad has both a daytime look (browns) and colors for more adventurous looks.  As much as I wanted to love the lipstick, the shade was not for me. The shade comes off almost a hot pink on my lips and I prefer a soft pink or a true red. The quality is superb and I can see why everyone raves about these lipsticks.  They go on super creamy. I will definitely be checking out some other shades in these lippies. As for the nail polish, you can check out my review of it here.

Do you subscribe to Ipsy or any other beatuy boxes? What do you think about this month's box?
